Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15th through October 15th is National Hispanic Heritage Month. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

Months that honor a particular heritage provide a reminder to intentionally create inclusive, caring learning communities that honor all students’ cultural backgrounds.  As we continue in a month of celebrating Hispanic Heritage, we will strive to consistently provide students with windows into others’ experiences and mirrors of their own.

As many of you may already know I am always encouraging our students to use their voices and share thoughts, ideas and topics that are important to them. Today I had a student come to me and do just that. The student had a beautiful idea for how we could design and decorate our main hallway bulletin board to celebrate hispanic heritage month. We worked together during lunch to begin the planning and we hope to have it completed by the end of next week. Stay tuned for next week’s newsletter to see pictures.

Mrs. Bridges

Happy Friday Roadrunner Families!

Walking through the halls this week I noticed a display from Mrs. Bridges' Spanish classes.

It reminded me of a literary piece titled “My Name” taken from a book I read in high school, The House on Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros. The narrator, Esperanza, gives background on her name along with an interpretation based on the world around her.

A similar at-home activity can be for families to create a poem or series of sentences highlighting the meaning of their name through their eyes, as seen in the example below:

Some of us may have family or cultural distinction, while others may have an interesting story behind the origin. Names are a part of who we are and the surrounding details are what make each of us that much more unique.

Enjoy the weekend!

Student Climate Survey Administration - Fall 2023

La Grange School District 102
Teaching & Learning Department
Student Climate Survey Information

In D102, we know that a strong school climate has positive impacts on student achievement, attendance rates, and school safety, as well as creating conditions for developing healthy social and emotional skills. We also feel it is critical to hear the voices of our students. To help facilitate that communication we provide a Student Climate Survey twice annually, once in September/October and again in March.

D102 will gather student perceptions of their school climate, as well as their own social-emotional well-being, in the following ways:

  • K-2nd grade students will orally provide their input during a classroom meeting conversation with their teacher.

  • 3rd-8th grade students will individually complete an online survey in Google Forms.

Results of the 3rd-8th grade survey are anonymous and will not be used to identify individual students. Rather, the data will be used to gather an overarching sense of students’ perceptions. Each building’s leadership team will use the survey results to inform school-wide planning while grade level teachers will use the data to help plan proactive classroom-based morning circles.

While the K-2nd grade classroom conversation is not anonymous, no student information will be collected or shared. Rather, themes identified during the K-2nd grade classroom conversations will be collected by the teacher and used to plan proactive classroom-based morning circles.

For more information see:

Families that wish to opt out of the survey should either contact their elementary child’s classroom teacher or their junior high child’s advisory teacher.
