Superintendent's Message

The end of the year is rapidly approaching! Students in eighth grade are thinking about being promoted to high school, and sixth graders are visiting Park and thinking about junior high. Almost all of the students are excited for a summer break filled with downtime, camps, trips, sports, etc. Generally, the excitement for what is to come also comes with some anxiety. It happens with children and adults.

This past fall, our son graduated with his Master's degree. He moved to England to attend undergrad and graduate school, lived in London, and then Sheffield for over five years. We are shocked at how quickly time flies; they leave as children and return as young adults. They leave as middle schoolers and return as high schoolers. It is often hard to let them go, but that is our role if we allow our children to blossom into successful contributing young adults!

I share this to remind people that I get it! And so do many of our teachers who have experienced the same things with their children. Our kids do find their way through this world. Our son did not do it alone; he had teachers, parents, and friends who guided, led, facilitated, and directed along the way. Our kids have vastly different options available to them now than when I was growing up. Schools are far from perfect, but when I look at the fantastic opportunities that District 102 provides and the unique opportunities we have to improve to meet the needs of our students continuously, I am excited for the incredible places our students, your children, will go.

This last month of school will go by quickly. Another year, another season, another grade in this short time we are on earth. Make the most of it! Encourage your children to make the most of it. Participate in something over the summer that will engage their brain; that will get them, or keep them, excited about something. But also give them downtime. Give them time to be creative, reflective, and quiet in the moment. Not everyone can afford camps or vacations. That is okay. There are so many things in our communities, through the libraries, rec centers, churches, and even the schools, that students can participate in for no cost or very low cost. Get them out of the house and outside. Provide some time with you where you and your child(ren) can be “in the moment and be present.”

Another school year has come and is almost gone. Thank you for sharing your children with us, partnering with your child’s school and teachers, and making learning an essential part of your child’s life. Enjoy the last few weeks of school.

Health News Reminder

  • The School Code of Illinois requires each child to have a  physical examination before entering sixth grade.

    • The District 102 expectation is that each 6th-grade student has a physical exam and record of immunizations on file in school before the first day of attendance.

  • All incoming 7th/8th graders wishing to participate in interscholastic sports at PJH will need a sports physical

    • It is the expectation of La Grange School District 102 that all physicals/immunizations are completed by the 1st day of school.

A health certificate to be completed by your service provider can be found on the district webpage under Health Services. Due to time limitations and increased demand for appointments for sports physicals, doctors’ offices frequently limit the number of appointments for sports exams or do not complete them after early August. Paperwork must be submitted to your school's health office

If you have any questions regarding the above requirements, please contact your school’s health office.

District 102 PRESCHOOL SCREENING 2023 – 2024

View English Flyer HERE
View Spanish Flyer HERE

LaGrange Elementary School District 102, in collaboration with Helping Hand, is conducting a screening for children from birth to age 5. The purpose of the preschool screening is to assess those children whose parents have concerns about delays in their child’s development in any of the following areas: vision, hearing, speech and language, fine and gross motor skills, or cognitive development. This is not a general developmental screening, nor does it replace your child’s routine visits to the doctor.

  • 2 yrs 10 months to 5 years (5 before Sept. 1) - will be screened by District 102

  • Birth to 2 yrs 10 months – will be screened by Helping Hand, in collaboration with District 102.

Parents are asked to complete a questionnaire for each child as the first step.  Based on the results, you will be notified if your child should attend a screening.  Screenings occur approximately every other month. Depending on the results of the screening, your child could potentially be considered for the following:

  • Early Intervention Services (Birth to 3) if determined by Helping Hand

  • Vision and hearing referrals to your private practitioner (Ages 3-5)

  • Fine and gross motor recommendation for home activities

  • Pre-Kindergarten At-Risk Programs – programs providing school for children ages 3-5 determined to be at-risk for achieving educational success.

  • Early Childhood Special Education – screening team will refer children identified as experiencing significant developmental delays for further evaluation to determine eligibility for special education services.

Screening dates- All screenings held at Barnsdale Road School, 920 Barnsdale Road, La Grange Park, unless noted:  9/18, 1/29 and rolling dates as needed

To request a questionnaire, please call: 708-215-6826.

aapi

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI Heritage Month) is an annual celebration that recognizes the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent to the United States. The month of May was chosen for AAPI Heritage Month because it commemorates the immigration of the first Japanese people to the United States on May 7, 1843. May is also a significant month because it recognizes Golden Spike Day, May 10, 1869, which marks the completion of the transcontinental railroad that was built with significant contributions from Chinese workers.

The 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act changed restrictive national origin quotas and allowed for the large numbers of Asians and Pacific Islanders to come to the United States with their families. In the mid-1970s, refugees from Southeast Asia like Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos came to the United States to flee war, violence, and hardship.

Today, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are the fastest growing racial group in the United States. AAPI Heritage Month celebrates the unique journey of all AAPI immigrants and citizens in the United States and their unique life experiences, traditions and cultures

referral gps

Referral GPS - Connecting People to Treatment:  We are committed to creating a culture of well-being for students, staff,  parents, and the community. In an effort to continuously support this commitment, the district has entered an agreement with ReferralGPS.

ReferralGPS is a web-based service focused on assisting our students,  staff, and community in finding local mental-health and substance use-related treatment. The service compliments the districts existing systems of support as a tool for student service teams and families to connect with treatment. Along with a searchable database of treatment options, ReferralGPS provides Care Navigation to assist families in triage, appointment setting, and follow-up care.

School families may access ReferralGPS in two ways:

1) Visit this link at https://referralgps.com/find-help/dist102 to search for treatment resources or connect with a Care  Navigator anonymously.

2) Contact Student Services (social workers, psychologists,  counselors) to seek out treatment options.

ReferralGPS takes into account all types of private and public insurance including PPO, HMO, Medicaid, Medicare, and families who are uninsured or underinsured. The platform also filters by age, gender, zip code, and special requests.

ReferralGPS is available for use by district students, staff, and families at no cost. All information entered on the ReferralGPS tool is completely confidential and securely stored.

If you are interested in seeking counseling-related services at this time,  please consider visiting https://referralgps.com/find-help/dist102 or reaching out to the Student Services team.
