PreK Corner
As parents and educators, we strive to teach our children how to independently function within their world. While our 3- and 4-year-olds need parental help, it has been agreed upon by preschool experts that kids are typically able to do more than we think!
What is one step we can take towards building this independence? Resist doing for your child what they can do themselves.
While it may be easier and faster to do it yourself in the moment, it will ultimately not help your child become more self-sufficient in the long run. Try asking, "Do you want me to help you or can you do it yourself?" This gives your child the autonomy they crave and the skill practice for independent functioning.

Students have been working hard to build their reading stamina. Classes are working their way towards 10 minutes of sustained reading and will try to reach 15 minutes by the end of the year. During independent reading, students practice the skills and strategies they learn during reading groups and whole-group lessons. It is also a chance to choose books of interest and develop a love for reading.
You can see a student cozying up with a book during independent reading time while the teacher is circulating the room and conferring with other students.
