Congress Park Dolphin Newsletter

3.7.25

Dear Congress Park Community,

Our third through sixth graders will begin IAR Testing this week. Please ensure that your child is prioritizing sleep and eating breakfast in the morning so they have energy to do their best!

Our kindergarten through second graders have been supporting the older students by sending motivational posters and messages to give them a boost of confidence before testing day.

WHAT IS IAR TESTING?

The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is a statewide, computer-based assessment designed to measure the academic progress of 3rd-8th grade students in reading and math, in alignment with the Illinois Learning Standards. IAR outcomes allow us to gain insight into how our students are growing academically compared to their peers across the state, and they serve as an important component for our Illinois State Report Card.

HOW MANY TESTING SESSIONS ARE REQUIRED?

Students in 3rd-6th grade will participate in two English Language Arts (ELA) testing sessions and three math testing sessions. Fifth grade students participate in 3 science sessions. While the average testing session duration is roughly an hour and a half, many students often complete the test well within that timeframe, depending on the grade level.

WHEN IS THE TESTING?

ELA testing will take place the week of March 10th. Math testing will take place the week of March 17th. The specific schedule for your child’s class will be communicated by their teacher.

Makeup sessions will occur throughout the month of March. It is very important for your child to arrive on time, as late entry into the classroom (once a testing session has begun) won't be possible, and a makeup test will be arranged.

If your child requires testing accommodations as outlined in their 504 Plan or Individualized Education Program (IEP), they will take the tests concurrently with their class (but generally in a separate location, depending upon their specific accommodation).

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT YOUR CHILD?

  • Ensure Punctuality: Please be on time to school. If possible, do not schedule appointments during school hours. Keep your child home if he/she is sick.

  • Encourage a Regular Sleep Schedule: Ensure your child gets adequate sleep, particularly the night before the test.

  • Provide a Healthy Breakfast: A nutritious breakfast fuels the brain and provides the energy needed for focused testing.

  • Promote a Positive Attitude: Remind your child to do their best and reassure them that making mistakes is part of the learning process. A positive mindset boosts confidence and performance.

  • Test-Taking Strategies: Discuss helpful strategies with your child, such as reading instructions carefully, managing time effectively, and reviewing their work. This preparation fosters a sense of readiness and confidence.

  • Support and Encouragement: Let your child know you are there to support and encourage them throughout the testing period. Regardless of the outcome, celebrate their efforts and progress.

We want to thank you in advance for your partnership in ensuring a positive testing experience for our students. When official results are released in the fall, we will send home your child’s score report. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Kind regards,

Amy Grieve
